THE faces of NHS heroes from Furness and beyond are being captured in spectacular digital watercolours.

They are the creations of an Ulverston photographer who, stuck at home during lockdown, has found a new outlet for expression,

Geoff Beattie, 50, has swapped capturing the picturesque scenery of the Lakes for honouring health and key workers - sat in front of his computer.

The care assistant wanted to follow in the footsteps of artist Tom Croft, whose stunning portraits of key workers have touched hearts.

Mr Beattie asked for people to send selfies to him on social media, for him to transform into portraits using filters and digital brushes on Photoshop.

He has received requests from a number of workers in Furness, and his social media presence has led to popularity further afield in Scotland and London.

“I’ve been doing pictures like this for a while,” Mr Beattie said.

“Someone brought to my attention the portraits of Tom Croft, which gave the inspiration.

“I’m still working as a care assistant. In my free time I can’t get out and about very much, but I need my creative fix.

“I did one of myself first just to show the style and people starting contacting me asking to do one for them.

“They really love it.

“I’ve been getting quite a few messages every day and it’s getting busy.

“I started out getting messages from ex-colleagues and friends but more people started contacting me on social media and now it’s been quite popular in Scotland, and I’ve been requests from places like London.

“I usually like to get out in the Lakes and take photos but I’ve had to stay and do this.

“The more I’m doing, the more I’m really getting into it.”

Mr Beattie, who works in a supporting housing complex in Ulverston, has broadened his range of subjects from NHS staff to other key workers, including those from car homes.

On why he decided to make the portraits, he said: “There’s a great sense of community in this crisis.

“It’s bringing the best out of people.

“I thought I could play a little part in that as well and do something to cheer people up.

“It’s about giving a little bit back.”
