RESCUERS were called out yesterday after a man and his teenage son found themselves in a ‘knife edge situation’ at an 'accident blackspot'.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team (WMRT) was called out to the walkers who reported themselves lost ‘in poor visibility in the vicinity of Piers Gill [situated on the descent from Scafell Pike]’ at around 6.30pm.

Search dog Jess was quickly able to locate the walkers, who were given head torches and guided to safety by team members.

A WMRT spokesman said: “Piers Gill is an extremely dangerous environment where we have sadly experienced many fatalities over the decades.

“Through making poor judgements on the weather forecast, the equipment they failed to bring and also the reliance on navigating by phone applications, the gentleman and his teenage son found themselves in a knife edge situation that could have very easily gone either way, putting themselves and team members at risk.”
