A MAN tragically died while walking near Scafell Pike.

The Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team were called out on Monday, August 31, at 5.07pm after a report of a walker falling unwell while making his way on the summit ridge between Scafell Pike and Great End.

The weather was cold at the time, and a coastguard helicopter was required to reach the man, however it was later stood down as the North West Air Ambulance Service were able to attend the scene.

The responders included 21 Wasdale MRT members and 10 Duddon & Furness Mountain Rescue Team.

In support were personnel from Cumbria Police, North West Air Ambulance, and two Coastguard helicopters.

Despite the noble efforts of both members of the public, and the rescue services the man sadly died.

Wasdale and Duddon & Furness team members made their way up the fell to bring the gentleman back down to Wasdale.

A second coastguard helicopter was requested to assist the teams in their journey down the mountain side.

They were able to complete the task, with assistance from some team members.

The Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team have extended their condolences to the family and friends of the walker and thank everyone who assisted them in reaching the man.

The rescue teams also responded to another incident soon after the call out on the ridge. A spokesman for the Wasdale Mountain Rescue team said: “Members of the public, a family member and the air crew did their utmost to help the gentleman but sadly to no avail and he passed away.

“Wasdale and Duddon & Furness team members made their way up the fell to bring the gentleman back down to Wasdale.

“A second coastguard helicopter was requested to assist as the carry from that location would have been very long and difficult. They were able to complete the task, with assistance from some team members.

“Many thanks to all involved for their help.

“The team would like to express their condolences to the family.”
