AN AVID cyclist has taken on a gruelling challenge to raise funds for a very important cause.

Ten-year-old Olly Booth from Kendal decided to take part in a money raising initiative, cycling 300 miles during September to raise money for Cancer Research.

“300 miles is no mean feat, especially for a ten- year -old,” said proud mum Tracy Brookes.

“He has developed a real passion for bikes, he got his first road bike for his birthday this year and he was looking for a challenge to do."

After receiving his exciting new present Olly searched for a money raising challenge, finally settling on the Cancer Research cycling fundraiser he chose the 300 mile option, rather than the 200.

“He wanted to use his love of cycling to raise money and help others and chose Cancer Research because he felt most people know someone who has been affected by it,” said Mr Brookes.

The youngster, who attends Dean Gibson School, is eating up the miles and has almost reached the 300 mile target, which is to be reached by the end of September.

So far he has raised over £700, smashing his original target of £150.

“I can’t believe that I’ve raised over £700 for Cancer Research,” said Olly.

“I thought £150 was a lot but £700 is amazing!

“ I chose to raise money for Cancer Research because most people know someone who has been affected by cancer.

“ I love cycling so much that doing this challenge is brilliant - I get to cycle and raise money too!

“Thanks to everyone who’s sponsored me.”

Olly has been supported right the way through his mission by dad Craig Booth and stepdad Carl Brookes, who have taken it in turns to accompany the passionate cyclist.

Mrs Brookes has said her son is 'absolutely loving' the challenge and that the family has been blown away by the support he has received.

"He absolutely loves it," she said.

"The further the better, the hillier the better.

"We set his target at £150 and he is delighted that he's raised over £700."

Olly, who recently started back at school, has been congratulated by his class teacher.

"His class teacher has said it's a fantastic challenge," added Mrs Brookes.
