EVERY year at this time, St Mary’s Church invites all those who have lost a loved one to a special Remembering Service with prayers, readings, recorded music, and a short address. 
Due to lockdown, the service will not take place in Church but has been recorded instead, available on the church website, stmarysambleside.org.uk
The Rushbearing AGM due to take place at 7pm next Tuesday, November 24 will now be held on Zoom.

A new ‘Cultivating Memories’ project recapturing hours spent happily gardening has been set up by Dignity in Dementia, to re-awaken memories of the pleasures of working in the garden for those with memory problems. 
The charity will send out a pack of A5 photographs to partners, friends and carers with questions that promote gardening memories, together with a scrap book to record people’s recollections. In return they would like to receive a photograph of any pages of interest which could be included in a Dignity in Dementia gardening memories booklet. 
This will be sent out to all those taking part, but limited numbers of packs are available, so email info@dignityindementia.org or ring Diane soon on 07771 682378 for a pack. 
Dignity have also set up a pilot monthly Gardening Club on Zoom, with a horticultural therapist demonstrating gardening projects that can be done on a table at home. 
All equipment will be delivered in advance so people can copy what they see on Zoom, and projects include a pinecone bird feeder, creating a Christmas decoration from natural materials, and planting bulbs and herbs.

Singers who are missing their regular choir sessions can join in with over 2000 others in the Quarantine Choir on You Tube at homechoir.uk. 
There are also Gentle Exercise Zoom classes at the Parish Centre on Fridays at 11am for 40 minutes with Ursula Brendling, free, or donations to Age UK.

In partnership with North West Electricity, the Parish Centre is promoting NWE’s Priority Service Register which supports users in the event of an electricity cut, regardless of who supplies their electricity.

The artist Bernard Eyre Walker, who lived in Langdale for many years, is widely remembered as a foremost painter of watercolours, even fifty years after his death. 
Yet few people knew of his life as a Royal Army Medical Corps stretcher bearer in the trenches throughout WW1. 
This extraordinary record recently came to light with the chance discovery by his great-niece Sara Woodall of his wartime diaries in an old archive box in Leeds University Library. The diaries, recording life and death in the midst of extreme war-devastation are graphically illustrated and reveal not only heroic tales of bravery but also the blunders of bungling officers and even humour in the trenches despite relentless gunfire and shelling. Bernard, 1887-1972, came to the Lakes after WW1 and was elected to the Lake Artists Society in 1927. He settled in Langdale in 1940, where he was a close friend of William Heaton Cooper and other well-known artists of the time, but never spoke of the First War. 
However, since his remarkable account of everyday life in unimaginably hellish conditions came to light, his diaries have recently been reproduced in “A Voice From The Trenches”, edited by Sara Woodall and published by Blackthorn Press at £19.95, available by contacting jdtwoodall@btopenworld.com.

COMMUNITY: Burton in Kendal
ST JAMES’ Act of Remembrance held at the War Memorial was well attended.
The names of the fallen from Burton in both World Wars, were read by John Long.
The Last Post faultlessly played by Jonathan Whiteley of Ingleton.
Wreaths were laid on behalf of the British Legion, Burton Parish Council and South Lakeland District Council.
A most poignant Act of Remembrance conducted by Neville Pereira with Tim Clarke, the Remembrance Bell Ringer.
The church building will remain open for private prayer on Wednesday mornings 11am – 12noon.
BURTON Morewood school said farewell to Deputy Head Stephen Thexton, known to all the children as Mr T. 
He began his teaching career at Burton Morewood Primary School 21 years ago in September 1999 starting in Years 3 and 4 then, quickly transferred into year 6. 
He has inspired and influenced over 500 children during the years both inside and outside the classroom. As well as an inspirational classroom teacher, Mr T has opened up opportunities through sport, drama and residentials to name but a few activities being led by him.
He will be sorely missed by the children as their Deputy Head Teacher and by the staff, to whom he
has been a guiding light, colleague, and friend. 
The children paid a special tribute to Mr T on the school field - safe in in their class ‘bubbles’- they performed a dance to music from ‘The Lion King’. 
A most touching tribute watched - from the safety of Caterpillar Walk, overlooking the grounds - by a gathering of parents, staff, past School Governors, and friends. 
The Head Teacher and everyone present wished a long, happy retirement to Mr Stephen Thexton inspirational teacher, Morewood School’s very own ‘Mr Chips’.
Endmoor

ISABEL O’Callaghan was presented with the Headteacher’s Award at Saint Patrick’s School for showing kindness to others.  Star of the Week certificates were awarded to Olivia Walker for a super effort in reading, to Abbie Remington for trying really hard with story writing, and to Callum Ashworth for a big improvement in his attitude to learning.
MEMBERS of The Club Inn will be pleased to hear that the committee have been busy tidying the garden and painting rooms during the current lockdown.

HOLME Athletic Football clubs next fixtures will be away to Cockerham on December 6 and home to Lune Valley on December 13.
WITH COVID restriction in place the Holme Festival of Sport Committee have decided to replace this year’s Holme Santa Dash with a Holme Christmas Scarecrow Trail.
