With lockdown rules in place, the people of South Lakes were forced to stay indoors for most of the year.

However, that didn’t stop the criminals from coming out to play.

According to the data from Cumbria Constabulary, 6768 crimes were reported in the South Lakes last year.

The most reported offence by far were violent and sexual offences (2225).

However, anti-social behaviour reports were also high with 1944 reports being made in 2020.

585 criminal damage and arson reports were made and 523 public order offences were reported.

Reports relating to theft and burglary were among the lowest types of crime reported last year.

12 ‘theft from person’ and robbery reports were made.

Bicycle theft reports were also relatively low (31).

South Lakes streets with the highest crime reports in 2020

According to the data, one South Lakes street stood out when it came to crime reports and that was Allhallows Lane in Kendal where 103 crime reports were made.

The most reported crimes on this street related to anti-social behaviour offences (39). However, violence and sexual offences were also high (25 reports)

Main Street in Egremont also saw a lot of crime reports (76), as well as Longpool (56).

How many crimes have gone unsolved?

Out of the 6768 crime reported, 4 per cent are currently awaiting a court outcome.

In 19 per cent of cases, no suspect has ever been identified.

A further 289 reports are still under investigation and in 1862 reports, police have been unable to prosecute a suspect.
