A Covid-secure, exciting outdoors activity that everyone should try at least once – that's what the Crabtree Clay Shoot hopes to offer experienced shooters and those who have never been to a range.

The range, located at Crabtree Farm in Lupton, Carnforth, has been running for 18 years after it started as a small shooting range for a family and their friends.

The shoot range is owned and operated by the Wightman family and was started by Edward Wightman, 64.

He runs the ground with his son Derek, 34 and Jonty, 27.

Jonty said: “It’s a great way to diversify the farm and it’s just a really fun thing to try out.

“The shooting brings diversification to the farm.

"We’ve had our ups and downs over the years so it’s an additional income that really helps.

“It started when my dad set it up for himself and his friends, but over the years it sort of spiralled from that into what it is today.

“Each year we must get thousands of people coming down.

“A lot of the time people haven’t shot before, but we have ways of introducing them to it safely and in a fun way."

Jonty said the range offers a variety of guns from various calibres, with 12s, 20s and 28 bores, as well as air rifles for people who don’t have licences.

"It also allows kids to have a go at it too," he said.

“Most of the people who have shot before bring their own equipment and weapons.

“The air guns for the kids allow families to come and try it out, which makes it a really fun and safe day out for them.

“That aspect is pretty new. We set that up during the first lockdown.

“Lockdown has been a mixed bag for us but we used the time to make a lot of changes and improvements.

“We’ve found that people are itching to get back to shooting."

The range closed in March last year and, although it opened again in May, it then closed for all of November an only reopened on March 31.

Jonty added: “We’ve lost a lot of time during lockdown but we are looking forward to thinks getting back to normal so we can welcome more people back.

“We do the occasional charity shoot but most of the customers are all fun shooters.

“Sometimes we attract professional shooters who can get a lot of good practise here with us. What we focus on is making it a relaxed, chilled vibe so everyone can enjoy themselves.

“It’s safe, Covid-secure, outdoors and really fun for people when they give it a try.

“Whether it’s your first time or not, everyone is welcome, and we’ve made a lot of improvements during lockdown which we hope people like.”
