A FIVE-bedroom house in the Lake District that was the most expensive on the market in Cumbria has been sold.

Balla Wray at High Wray near Ambleside was up for sale for £3.5 million.

The home was advertised by estate agents Ashdown Jones.

Originally built in 1870, the house has a separate detached stable cottage, whose upstairs is used as a gym.

It is described by the estate agents as 'the holy grail of Lake District homes'.

"Once the electric oak gate closes behind the car, Balla Wray becomes a bastion of beauty and solace," a listing for the house said.

The home also has its own boathouse and access to Windermere.

A listing for the property said: "Hidden from sight, keeping the best lake views for itself, along the quieter 'local' side of Windermere is Balla Wray: the home with the magic formula.

"Once the electric oak gate closes behind the car, Balla Wray becomes a bastion of beauty and solace."

The home was first listed on the market for around double the price.
