A TOTAL of seven people from Cumbria have joined star names in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Ulverston saxophonist Jess Gillam is being made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to music.

Penrith's Helen Storey, who founded autism support charity Triple A, is also being made an MBE - for services to the community in Cumbria.

The other names from Cumbria to be made MBEs are:

  • Catherine Dutton. Chair of Kendal College Corporation. For services to Education and Training. (Kendal)
  • Dr Carolyn Elizabeth Otley. For services to the community in Cumbria during Covid-19. (Cockermouth)

Being made Medallists of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) are:

  • Peter Alger. For services to young people. (Ulverston)
  • Elizabeth Mawson. For services to the community in Seascale, Cumbria during Covid-19. (Seascale)
  • Melanie Ann Walker. For services to the community in Allonby, Cumbria, during Covid-19. (Maryport)

They join star names such as footballers Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling on the honours list.

Rebecca Oaks, of Carnforth, Lancashire, is being made an MBE for services to coppicing and green wood crafts.
