A SEX offender was found with £450 of cannabis products after police searched his home.

Officers carried out a warrant at the home of James Chalmers after he failed to engage with his offender manager, a requirement of him being on the sex offenders register.

South Cumbria Magistrates' Court heard police searched his home and found the drug as well as two bank cards.

He had not told authorities he had the cards as required under a notification order made by a court.

Chalmers, 27, of Rawlinson Street in Barrow and previously of Far Sawrey near Ambleside, admitted both offences.

In 2013 he was sentenced for sexual activity with a girl under 16.

Prosecutor Peter Kelly said the search was conducted on March 12.

"DC Chadwick, his offender manager had been unable to access the defendant's home.

"On March 12 a search warrant was executed.

"The defendant was present in the property when the officer and colleagues arrived.

"They had some suspicion there may be cannabis in the house."

He said officers found herbal cannabis in a bottle and more of the drug in the kitchen.

They said cannabis growth was found in an outhouse at the property.

Further amounts of the drug were found in his bedroom.

Mr Kelly said the drugs recovered from Chalmers' house were estimated to be worth around £450.

The two bank cards were also found by police.

In mitigation Leah Kirk told the court Chalmers had used the cannabis to self-medicate, with ulcers in his stomach irritated by other medicine.

She said while he was aware he was required to inform authorities of bank accounts he did not know that extended to bank cards.

Chalmers told the court one the two bank cards had expired and he had not thrown it away.

Magistrates sentenced Chalmers to a 20-week curfew keeping him at home between 6pm and 6am.
