THE cost of all food and drink at a Kendal eatery is to be slashed for one day only this month - but will be followed by an increase in food prices.

Pub chain JD Wetherspoon will make the 7.5 per cent cut on Thursday, September 23, to encourage the chancellor to create 'tax equality' between pubs and supermarkets.

The price cut will apply to The Miles Thompson in Kendal's Allhallows Lane.

However, meal prices at the site will increase by 50p on September 29 ahead of a rise in VAT to 12.5 per cent on October 1.

VAT was cut to five per cent by Chancellor Rishi Sunak in July 2020 - and prices at Wetherspoon pubs were lowered.

"It is unfair that supermarkets pay zero VAT on food, but pubs and restaurants, in normal circumstances, pay 20 per cent," said Antony Thompson, manager of The Miles Thompson.

"We urge the chancellor to create tax equality between pubs and supermarkets by making the current VAT regime for pubs permanent."

The Government is planning to return VAT to 20 per cent in 2022.
