A HEADTEACHER has stressed his school takes safeguarding of students 'very seriously' after a former teacher appeared in court over child sex offences.

David Goodwin, previously of Furness Academy in Barrow, appeared before a court after he was charged with three sexual offences involving a child.

Headteacher Simon Laheney said the defendant was no longer employed at the school.

Appearing at South Cumbria Magistrates' Court, Mr Goodwin offered no plea to charges of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, attempting to incite a child into sexual activity and attempting to cause a child to watch or look at an image of sexual activity.

The teacher, of Broughton Road in Dalton, is alleged to have committed the offences in April.

Mr Laheney said: “I can confirm that David Goodwin was employed by Furness Academy until 31st May 2021.

"It is not appropriate for the school to make any comments relating to an ongoing court matter and the school must respect the obligations imposed by data protection legislation.

"The school takes the safeguarding of its students very seriously and can confirm that all regulatory and statutory obligations have been fulfilled and complied with proactively, comprehensively and consistently.”

Wearing a suit, the defendant spoke to give his name and address and confirm his pleas during the short hearing.

Prosecutor Peter Bardsley confirmed Mr Goodwin was employed by Furness Academy at the time the allegations relate to.

It is understood the allegations do not relate to any pupils at the school.

Mr Goodwin's case was sent to Preston Crown Court, where he is due to appear on October 22.

The defendant was remanded on unconditional bail until his next court appearance.

Chair of the bench Sharon Gillam: "We've heard everything that's been said today.

"This matter will be dealt with at Preston Crown Court.

"We believe it's beyond our jurisdiction because it's so serious."
