A YOUNG Kendal activist has been chosen to take part in an upcoming documentary that will launch on Sky Kids and NOW.

Hannah Wright, 17, will be included in the Sky Original alongside other young climate activists, each from six different continents.

Together they will be delivering a message about how climate change is already having an impact on their lives and deliver an emotive call to action.

Representing Britain, Hannah first became involved in climate activism when she heard about the plans to build a new coal mine near Whitehaven.

She is a member of a Youth Climate Action group in the Lake District and has recently joined a steering committee for the Cumbrian Youth Climate Conference.

The documentary comes ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference.

Hannah spoke with coal miners involved in the Whitehaven project and travelled to Sweden.

She said: "It felt to me as if we were going backwards instead of forwards. It’s obvious to me that climate change is happening now and we need to act now. I felt quite undermined that these plans would ever be given serious consideration when governments across the world have been saying to us that they’re going to tackle climate change - it felt to me that we were being lied to."

The 30-minute Sky Original documentary, commissioned by Sky Kids, COP26: In Your Hands is introduced by HRH Prince Charles who outlines his concerns for the planet.

The programme also features UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as the host of COP26.

The other teenagers representing the world’s six habitable continents in the documentary are Darielen, aged 15 from Brazil; Kynan, aged 16 from Indonesia; Queen, aged 17 from Cameroon; Sophia, aged 15 from Canada, and 16-year-old Tamsyn, from Australia.

Lucy Murphy, director of Kids Content, Sky, said: “We all have a responsibility to do what we can to help protect our planet for the next generation.

“With Sky Kids, we want to produce content that not only inspires, excites, and engages young people but also helps them learn about important issues, such as climate change. “COP26: In Your Hands features six incredible teenagers, whose actions, and words I believe will really resonate with our audiences. I hope this film inspires many to take action.”
