Remembrance Day will look a little more normal this year as towns prepare for the return of services and parades to honour those who served after last year’s more subdued affair.

There will be services in Kendal on both Armistice Day (Thursday, November 11) and Remembrance Day (Sunday, November 14).

The Mayor of Kendal, accompanied by a bugler and representatives from the Royal British Legion, will lead a moment of silence at the War Memorial in the Market Place at 11am on Thursday.

Wreaths will be laid in Market Place and at the K-Shoes Memorial on Lound Road.

On Sunday, the mayor will lay wreaths at the Gilkes memorial on Little Aynam and at Romney Gardens, before laying a wreath at the War Memorial in Market Place at 9.30.

There will be a procession from the Town Hall, down Highgate, to Kendal Parish Church at 10.30 for the annual Remembrance Day Service at 10.45.am. Following the service, the parade will return up Highgate to the Town Hall.

Although the events are taking place as normal this year, some Covid precautions will be in place, at both the Town Hall and at Kendal Parish Church.

The Mayor of Kendal, Cllr Doug Rathbone said: “Remembrance is particularly special this year, as last year’s was blighted by Covid.

“It’s such an important opportunity for us to reflect on the sacrifice of those we lost and those who served, and I hope as many Kendalians as possible are able to join us.”

Elsewhere, The Windermere branch of The Royal British Legion will hold a Remembrance ceremony at the town’s War Memorial at 11 am on Thursday.

This is when The Royal British Legion and Windermere and Bowness Town Council’s wreaths will be laid.

However, the usual Remembrance Parade and service at St Martin's Church will not take place this year, according to the council.

In Grange the Remembrance service will take place at the War Memorial in the Ornamental Gardens, on Sunday at 3pm.
