Nature-loving families will be given a unique chance to explore the living world of the Lake District in winter through a series of activity trails with a famous children's character.

The National Trust have teamed up with renowned author and illustrator Nick Butterworth's creation Percy the Park Keeper to organize a series of winter wanders at Sizergh, Allan Bank, Aira Force and Sticklebarn.

The wanders are aimed at bringing children and their families closer to nature, to experience the variety of plant and wildlife that can be seen during the cold season, and encourage children to be Percy's helper for the day.

WHO IS PERCY THE PARK KEEPER?

Percy, voiced by Jim Broadbent, is the star of a an animated childrens TV series that ran between 1996 and 1999, based on the popular books by British author Nick Butterworth. It shows Percy taking care of his park and trying to find time with his many animal friends such as Badger, Owl, Fox, Mice, Mole, and Robin. There is also a series of audiobooks narrated by Richard Briers.

National Trust organisers say: "After reading Percy’s handwritten note and donning his famous hat families will follow clues, find Percy’s missing equipment and enjoy activities and games as they complete the trail.

"Highlights of the winter wander include helping to keep things tidy for when the springtime shoots appear and exploring to find out which animals call this part of the Lake District their home."

Children will also be given the chance to have a photograph taken with Percy at the end of the trail and will all receive a prize for their efforts in helping Percy to complete his winter tasks.
