A popular country pub in South Lakeland has been given national recognition, beating off some stiff competition from all over the UK.

The picturesque Wheatsheaf in Brigsteer, just west of Kendal, has been credited for the 3rd best roast in the country by review site Rate Good Roasts.

The Black Labrador in nearby Underbarrow was named 5th in the survey, making the Kendal area a national hotspot for those of us who love tucking into a good roast dinner.

The Wheatsheaf announced their delight with a Facebook post:

"What amazing news we’ve received……

"Number 3 in all of the UK

"What a fabulous accolade to have, in what has been such a difficult year!!!!

"Well Done to Tom and the rest of the team for such high performances throughout the difficult times…..

"Well done to The Black Labrador for their top 10 position.. it’s nice to have 2 of the best served roast dinners to be here in the heart of the Valley!!!

"From all of the Team at The Wheatsheaf, Brigsteer we hope you all have a happy and healthy 2022."

The Wheatsheaf was only topped by the Bull and Bear in Manchester, which features a menu by celebrity chef Tom Kerridge, and Great British Menu winner James Cochran's 12:51 restaurant in London which came in second.
