The father-and-son combo forever linked to the Lake District, and some of the world's most famous speed records, have been honoured by a new clothing range.

RetroClassic have launched a range of 5 t-shirts, commemorating the achievements of Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbell, the legendary duo who set numerous land and water speed records over the course of 40 years.

The t-shirt designs are based on photographs from the Campbell Family Heritage Trust dated from the 1920s to the 1950s, with the first showing Malcolm in 1925 with Sunbeam, the car in which he'd set his maiden Land Speed Record in 1924.

Don Wales, grandson of Sir Malcolm and the holder of several records in his own right, said: "Sir Malcolm and Donald were both exceedingly brave and talented men.

"It doesn’t matter if it was on water or land, jet-powered or wheel-driven, the Campbell name became synonymous with record-breaking."

There are three other designs that celebrate the 1935 Campbell-Railton Blue Bird in which Sir Malcolm (knighted in 1931), took the Land Speed Record over 300mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA.

Sir Malcolm's son Donald, 14 at the time, witnessed the historic Bonneville runs, and was inspired to begin his own speed career after his father's death in 1948.

Donald started on water rather than land, using Sir Malcolm’s Blue Bird K4, which he renamed, preferring the single-syllable Bluebird K4.

Donald replaced the K4 with the jet-powered K7 by the early 1950s, which would take Donald to seven Water Speed Records in nine frenetic years.

He broke the 200mph barrier at Ullswater in 1955, and made history once again in 1964, becoming the only man to break both the Land Speed Record and Water Speed Record in the same year.

The fifth t-shirt shows Donald at Coniston Water in November 1957, when he set a new Water Speed Record of 239.07mph in Bluebird K7.

He returned to the same venue in January 1967 in a bid to take the record over 300mph, and was on course to achieve his ambition when the boat crashed on its return run and Donald tragically lost his life.

Don Wales said: "Our family is very proud to be working with RetroClassic on this beautifully produced range of t-shirts, which are a fitting tribute to a period of time in which two patriotic Brits pushed themselves to the limit - and sometimes beyond - in the single-minded pursuit of speed."

The t-shirts cost £24 and are available at www.retroclassicclothing.com.
