BAE Systems Submarines announce more than 300 apprenticeship positions available

Roles available range from steelworkers to software engineers. Applications for this year's intake are open until February 28.

A world-class learning environment - the Submarines Academy for Skills and Knowledge - is right there on the Barrow site with all the facilities and expertise to help new starters progress to better qualifications and rewarding careers.

Phil Athersmith, Head of Early Careers Delivery, said: "Early Careers starters are the future of our business; that's why we invest in them so heavily.

"The learning environment and the opportunities offered are second to none. Our business has Royal Navy contracts stretching past the 2030s so we are always looking for the next generation of shipbuilders who want to live and work in beautiful South Cumbria."

This year the 317 advertised positions at the submarines business in Barrow include 224 roles open to people with GCSE level qualifications or equivalent. Those are apprenticeships in trades like welding, steelworking and painting as well as roles in functions like engineering or business.

There are also 91 roles open to those with A Levels or equivalent. Those apprenticeships are in functions like engineering, project management and finance.

A key focus for the Submarines business is to ensure it attracts and recruits people from a range of diverse backgrounds.

Phil said: "We have some excellent apprentices working in our craft trades and changes to working practices mean that craft trade roles are open to all.

"Our business prides itself on providing a modern workplace with diversity and inclusion embedded in everything we do. I'd certainly encourage people to look at the career opportunities on offer in Barrow helping to build submarines for our Royal Navy."
