MILNTHORPE Primary School’s Table Tennis team found great success at the England Schools Table Tennis zone finals.

The team of four boys and a reserve took part in the finals against five other teams from across Cumbria and the North East in the contest which was held on January 15 at the much-admired sports hall facilities of Kirkby Stephen GS.

The squad included Elliott Riley, Sam Cook, Sam Williamson, James Pennington, and Owen Fletcher.

Milnthorpe’s first match was against a strong team from Banksfield, Middlesbrough, which unfortunately ended in a 7-1 defeat.

However, the team showed the loss had not disheartened them as they showed good form against Acre Head from Hull.

They dominated the match and won by eight points to nothing.

They went on to defeat Bricknell by 7-1, before finally another dominant 8-0 beating of Bransty from Whitehaven.

Finishing second place, the squad has now earned a place at the Regional Finals which will be held in Grantham on February 6.

The lads at Milnthorpe are now one of 16 teams left in the competition with four teams playing in four centres across the country.

This time only the four winners will meet in the national finals at Wolverhampton in April.
