AN activist from Kendal who blocked an Amazon depot on Black Friday is due to face trial.

Beatrice Pooley joined other Extinction Rebellion climate activists to block the company's depot in Gateshead on November 26.

The 64-year-old, of Garden Road, is among six defendants due to face trial at Sunderland Magistrates' Court on July 7.

The activist is accused of aggravated trespass and obstructing distribution.

Ms Pooley denied the charges when she appeared via video link at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court.

The blockade was part of an international action by Extinction Rebellion targeting 15 Amazon fulfilment centres across Europe, with 13 of those in the UK.

It happened on what would have been the busiest day of the year for the online retailer.

Protesters were seen to block the entrances to the site using large bamboo structures, lock-ons and banners.

Activists said the company 'exemplifies how the current economic system unsustainably exploits workers and the planet in the pursuit of endless growth'.

The protest was in solidarity with several unions, who launched a global campaign called 'Make Amazon Pay'.

Amazon stressed it had committed to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2040.
