A SOUTH Lakes author has published his latest book detailing the accounts of serving personal in Cumbria who fought for their country.

John Nixon, from Ulverston, is known for his writings on military history and accounts.

He published his latest book ‘Veterans Voices’ in his series of releases about the RAF.

Having spent 28 years researching and gathering stories from airmen and women who were trained or served in the South Lakes, his book details their accounts and celebrates their accomplishments.

John has gathered stories from service personal at RAF Millom, RAF Walney, and RAF Clark.

John wrote: ‘Listen then as our veteran’s recount for you bombing raids over occupied territory, being shot down and evading the Germans, ditching in the Irish sea, surviving crashes in the mountains, breaking into the stations’ mess bar, and drinking the beer but also the horrors of Auschwitz and the death march.

‘Many of these stories will remain with you long after you put down this book, this material was placed in my hands by some of the most courageous, generous and kind-natured people it has ever been my good fortune to meet, and it is timely on this 75th anniversary of the end of WWII that their voices be heard.’

John also plans to write a future book based on his experiences working in the prison service.
