Windermere Jetty Museum have announced the full programme for the inaugural Windermere Science Festival this March.

The Festival, which will take place during British Science week on 19 and 20 March, will feature hands-on workshops, guest speakers performances and performances, with well-known TV presenter, physicist and oceanographer Helen Czerski giving the festival’s headline talk at the Old Laundry Theatre on the theme of water.

Nick Greenall, Director Windermere Science Festival, said: "We are thrilled to be welcoming so many fantastic scientists, entertainers and artists to this event.

"I’m particularly delighted to be welcoming one of the UK’s foremost experts on water, Helen Czerski, who’ll be making appearances across the weekend."

A Festival statement listed some of the other attractions on offer:

"The Mad Science Show and the Institute of Physics brings the wow to chemistry, physics and engineering through interactive demonstrations.

"Professor Pumpernickel brings whizz, pop, bangs to the museum site.

"There is a nature-based family art workshop led by Crow & Apricot, a steam wood bending workshop with Charlie Whinney, demos and talks with Science GRRL, fish tanks from the Freshwater Biological Association and more!

"There is an introduction to open water swimming workshop with a focus on mental health and well-being run by Vicki McCreadie, Gilly McArthur and Jonathan Cowie, three fully qualified swim coaches with extensive experience in the outdoor industry."  

Rhian Harris, Chief Executive of Lakeland Arts, who operate Windermere Jetty Museum said: "We are excited to be hosting the first Windermere Science festival. The theme of 'water' is a perfect fit for Windermere Jetty Museum where engineering, architecture, art and nature all come together on the shores of England’s largest lake.

"It will be a fun day out for families of all ages, and a chance for anyone with a National Lottery ticket to explore our venue for free."

There will be expert talks on the reintroduction of beavers and mussels, and visitors can take a boat trip to see the UK’s first ever freshwater mussel 'Ark' or try Raven’s Wake, an immersive sound experience aboard a heritage boat.

The Festival statement also said: "With a children’s menu at the spacious lakeshore cafe, heated outdoor seating under shelters made by Charlie Whinney and the Wrecked! activity trail, there is plenty do for a full day out.

"Parking is free at the Museum."
