HUNDREDS of items are being donated to the Ukrainian border from a Carnforth pub.

The Canal Turn pub has launched a collection appeal working with Carnforth Caravans to send items, clothing, tents and toiletries to Ukraine.

An estimated half a million people have fled the country since the invasion by Russia.

Manager Bill Johnston has seen hundreds of items donated - so much so the pub is running out of space.

He said: “It’s been crazy. We’ve being unloading so much stuff and it’s only been going for about a day.

“After a few hours we had a huge pile of items.

“We’ve had a lot of the regulars come and help us and in just one night we’ve seen nearly a thousand items.

“They’ve donated new stuff, baby clothes, toiletries, toothbrushes, sleeping bags and even tents.

“It’s basically ‘my house is gone so what would I need that can’t go in a small case’. Those are the items they are donating which is what people need.

“We were doing our local quiz last night and we had to delay that and make an announcement asking for anyone to help us unload all the cars that had arrived.

“We had about eight regulars put their drinks down and begin unloading cars.

“We’ve been working with Carnforth Caravans as they have been in contact with the polish centre in Manchester. Friday night it will all go to them and then go to Wrexham before being sent to the Ukrainian border.

“The community needed a local drop off point and we are opened seven days and open until late at night which makes it easier for people.

“The pub has always acted as a community action point and we’re pleased to do it again.”

“We'll run out of space in that room soon as we need to keep access clear so will need to find other areas of the pub to store.”

The donations have been aided by local schools and parents who dropped off items with their children.
