A FORMER boxer will be holding an opening day this weekend to officially open his own gym.

Bentham's Tomi Tatham will be opening the doors of his new gym 'TNT Fitness' at the Cowan Bridge units for the first time after weeks of 'hard slog' getting it up 'to scratch'.

Towards the end of his boxing career, Tomi decided he needed a backup option and started personal training around nine years ago.

Tomi said the idea to open a gym was a 'natural progression' from where he was.

He said: "We started at Bentham town hall doing boxing classes, then we moved around and I just felt that in the area we were short of something that did class as a gym with personal training."

The interest in the gym has been 'phenomenal' said Tomi.

"I've had a lot of people I train helping out with painting, cleaning and setting stuff up, everyone has got involved it's been absolutely phenomenal I think the area is excited," he said.

The opening day held on Sunday, March 20 will allow people to meet with Tomi, tour the gym, check out the equipment and sign members up if they want to join.

Tomi said opening his own gym was 'very scary'.

"I am still trying to take it all in," he said. "After boxing, I said to myself: 'I need something, I would love to have my own gym' and finding the right facility is phenomenal.

"Finding the right place, finding the money is such a scary thing but I needed something after boxing."
