Commuters at Oxenholme station responded to the news that services will be delayed across the UK due to strikes.

The members of the RMT union voted in favour of strike action across Network Rail and 13 train operating companies, including Northern, TransPennie, and Avanti West Coast, all of which run through Oxenholme station. Northern rail serves the Furness line and Lakes Line.

The union's leaders will now decide when to call strikes, which would bring huge parts of the network to a standstill.

This is the first time signallers have taken part in a strike with Network Rail since 1994 after the company announced plans to shed 2,500 jobs to make £2billion of savings.

A group of women were waiting on the platform for a train to London.

One of them said: "Luckily it's not affected us but if it had been cancelled we have been planning our trip for months and it would have completely ruined our plans."

Another said: "We very rarely use the train. It is not reliable and too expensive."

Her friend agreed: "It's actually cheaper to fly down to London from here then get the train. If we weren't all going together that's what I would have done."

A lady about to set off to London after a holiday in the Lakes said: "I wouldn't think about visiting here by myself if it wasn't with a car. If it wasn't for my friend driving me around I would have brought it up.

"The trains can get you to Oxenholme but they're no good at getting you to where you actually want to go in the Lakes in time."

When told that RMT voted for strike action, she said:  "It's irritating for everyone in the country, and is especially an issue for people that are less economically able and cannot afford to run a car."
