A DISTRICT Councillor for Kendal has offered support to the Netherfield Cricket Club after a string of disturbances and vandalism plagued the area.

Councillor Eamonn Hennessy, Westmorland and Furness Unitary Councillor, has reached out to the club following a report of vandalism behind made by the club by a group of unknown youths.

Police are investigating the incident that left a set of benches damaged, and a store room broken into.

Eamonn Hennessy said: “It’s a very saddening thing to have happen.

“There have been similar issues around small sport clubs in the area. Kendal United had some problems a few years back with vandalism.

“These are community assets for everyone to use, and these mindless acts are very sad to see. They don’t achieve anything.

“A lot of young people lack things to do. Which leads them to vandalism and hanging out in these places because they feel that this is the way forward.

“These places are out of the way and aren’t covered by CCTV.

“I have spoken to the chairman of the club, and as I’m one of the district councillors, and we have a locality budget to spend on bits and pieces. I said I’d be happy to contribute towards the repairs for them.

“I’m not a fan of young people being charged and given criminal records, but something needs to be done. I’d want to speak to the people who did this and have them put back into the community. These clubs are for the whole community and many of them survive on a shoe string budget.”
