The Vice Chair of the Liberal Democrat Westmorland, Furness and Eden Party has called for a car park to be installed for residents living on the A685 in Kirkby Stephen.

Adrian Waite, who stood as a candidate for Kirkby Stephen & Tebay in the last council elections, said:

"The South Road is part of the A685 trunk road that goes through Kirkby Stephen. It carries a significant amount of through traffic.

"However, it is also a residential area. The road is narrow and few of the residents have access to off street parking, meaning that many cars are parked on the roadside or the pavements.

"This causes traffic congestion, inconvenience to pedestrians, and often damage to parked vehicles."

Mr Waite said that a local survey done by Kirkby Stephen Liberal Democrats demonstrated that 'this is a major concern of residents.'

"As the A66 will be closed due to construction work, the A685 from Brough to Tebay via Kirkby Stephen will likely bring in more traffic as a diversion route, making it an even busier road."

National Highways replied:

"We are working with the local authority to understand what impact the scheme will have on the A685 during construction."
