SOUTH Lakes MP Tim Farron said the Conservatives are 'out of touch with the people of Cumbria' by keeping Boris Johnson as their leader.

Mr Farron reacted to the result of the confidence vote in Boris Johnson as 41 per cent of Conservative MPs decided to keep the Prime Minister as their premier.

He said: "It increasingly feels as though the Conservative Government are taking us for granted.

"It is clear that the government cannot focus on fighting for us as we struggle with the cost-of-living and other challenges, as they are too busy fighting each other."

The Conservative MP for Furness Simon Fell refused to be drawn into a discussion over which way he voted, stating that he believed 'private ballots should remain private.'

He admitted that it had been a tough day for the Conservatives in a tweet.

In a letter to his constitutents, Mr. Fell said the Government had over the pandemic: "A rotten core with an unacceptable culture carried on regardless of the restrictions placed on the rest of us."

This was in refence to the Sue Gray investigation into the Partygate scandal.

The Sue Gray report sparked the letters of no confidence submitted by Conservative backbenchers to the 1922 Committee. Once the threshold was reached, the vote went forward.
