It’s no wonder that the Lake District’s dramatic countryside landscapes have caught the eyes of Hollywood film crew, with more than a few blockbuster movies and TV series being set around the county.

Whether you are a film fanatic or love a good Netflix binge, there are plenty of places right on your doorstep where you can relive all the action!

Cumbria is no stranger to Hollywood celebrities, and the biographical film ‘Miss Potter’ featuring Renee Zellweger tells the tale of arguably one of Cumbria’s best-known figures, Beatrix Potter.

There are plenty of attractions around the county that are great for family days out to celebrate Potter’s beloved stories, from the World of Beatrix Potter attraction to Hilltop House. While you can also visit several filming locations, including Loughrigg, Grasmere, Loweswater and Coniston.

Meanwhile the historic market town of Kirkby Lonsdale is perfectly placed to explore Cumbria’s slice of the Dales and is also one of the settings for fantasy favourite, Dr Doolittle featuring Robert Downey Jr and Antonio Banderas.

The charming cobblestone streets you walk today were almost unrecognisable during filming, as they were transformed into a period scene for a dramatic car chase, with layers of mud and straw and horse-pulled carriages throughout the town.

Fabulous scenery looks good on camera, and Cumbria has plenty of it to go around. The stunning Blea Tarn and Rydal Caves are notable backdrops in the second season of Netflix’s The Witcher, featuring Henry Cavill.

There are plenty of nearby walking trails to explore for the day and you will see why their other-worldly beauty made the perfect setting for the fantasy world.

If you are looking for a city escape, then head north to Carlisle. As the capital of Cumbria with a dramatic castle at its heart, it’s no wonder Carlisle was chosen as a key setting for the first season of historical TV drama, Outlander.

While you’re here, be sure to explore the Cathedral or learn about the rich history of Hadrian’s Wall.
