FORMER pupils are organising a school reunion 50 years after they walked out of the gates for the final time.

John Houston, Peter Legat, Alan Thwaites and David Rhodes attended the school formerly known as Ulverston Grammar School from 1965-1972 and are organising the 50th Reunion for Saturday, October 1 in Ulverston.

David Rhodes, 68, is appealing for 'as many people as possible' to come along to the event and reunite with their former classmates.

David said the four of them attended a UVHS reunion 25 years ago and had been in regular contact since.

He added: "The four of us met up in November 2021 in Ulverston and through Facebook word got around that there might be another reunion with it being 50 years since we left in 1972.

"We got our heads together and thought well if we don't do it now we will never do it."

Although their initial focus was on Upper sixth leavers in 1972 they would like to extend the invite to Lower sixth in 1972 and students who would have left at the end of sixth Form in 1970.

The reunion will be taking place at The Mill, Ulverston on Saturday, October 1 from 7:30pm.

The event is a ticket-only event. Tickets are on sale for £10 per person and include a buffet and private room hire.

The money from the tickets will be used to cover the cost of the reunion and if there is any money left over the money will be given to a charity which will be decided on the night.

David, who now lives near Preston, said the group was trying to spread the word of the reunion by any means possible as like him former pupils of the school may have moved away from the area and be living all over the UK.

David said: "It's the thought of seeing all these people who are going to be retired now and the last time we met up was 25 years ago or indeed in 1972."

On his favourite memory from his time at school, David said: "All four of us were very sporty and we all played rugby right through school for the first team.

"It was just a great place to be and we spent seven years of our life there and it has left us with great memories."
