WESTMORLAND and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron has taken his campaign to the save post offices in his constituency out on to the streets of Kendal.

With six other campaigners, Mr Farron spent a couple of hours at the Birdcage, Finkle Street, collecting hundreds of signatures for a petition against Post Office Ltd's network change' programme, which threatens to axe up to a dozen post offices in South Lakeland.

The MP plans to personally hand over the petition and hundreds of letters he has collected from around his constituency to Post Office bosses.

The company says it wants to save millions of pounds a year by axing 2,500 post offices nationwide. More than 40 in Westmorland and Lonsdale have been put on a "high risk of closure" list and it is feared that one in four of these will definitely close.

Mr Farron has embarked on a campaign to oppose the closure programme, both as a constituency MP and the Liberal Democrat party's rural affairs spokesman.
