PASSENGERS have been warned not to travel as fresh strikes bring Cumbria's rail network to a halt.

The strike, which begins today (Wednesday, July 27) will last 24 hours but services on Thursday morning are expected to be affected.

The latest strike is expected to include 40,000 workers, including 20,000 from Network Rail and 14 train operating companies.

Similarly to June’s strike action, a 'very limited' timetable will be available across the UK with only around 20% of services running across half the network.

Trainline shows that there will be no services running from any of the south Cumbrian train stations apart from Oxenholme which will see four train services operating.

Avanti West Coast is advising their customers not to travel unless necessary as services will be significantly reduced and those that do run will be very busy.

Tickets from the 26-28 July will be valid on any Avanti West Coast service until the 29 July.

Sales are also being suspended for services on the main day of strike action on Wednesday to minimise the number of those affected.

LNER is running a reduced service between Edinburgh Waverley and London King's Cross. It recommends that those needing to travel reserve a seat beforehand.

Northern are also warning their customers not to travel today and tickets dated for Wednesday, July 27 can be used until  Tuesday, August 2.
