A KENDAL activist has been remanded in custody following a climate protest.

Gwen Harrison, 45, is being held in HMP Peterborough after taking part in Just Stop Oil protest on August 25 in Kent.

She will be detained until at least September 23 when she will appear at Basildon Crown Court in Essex.

Dozens of people from Cumbria have been engaged in a series of actions with the climate campaign group Just Stop Oil.

More than 1,300 arrests have been made since April 1 this year.

Protestors have targeted oil depots, petrol stations and motorways in the latest round of actions with dozens of arrests made in Essex and the West Midlands.

From her cell in HMP Peterborough she said: ‘I’m in prison because I am trying to stop our government from stealing our futures.

“Our government is giving the go ahead for more oil and gas to be extracted from North Sea when scientists are telling us that we need to the exact opposite if we are to avoid climate collapse.

“Ordinary people are being jailed when the real criminals: the politicians and fossil fuel company bosses, are taking us to our deaths.

“I’m so proud of the hundreds of my fellow Cumbrians who support what we are doing and urge them to join us - nobody else is going to save us.”
