GOVERNMENT minister John Hutton has stressed the importance of investing in renewable energy technology as a way of tackling climate change.
Barrow and Furness MP Mr Hutton, who is also Minister of State for business, enterprise and regulatory reform, spoke about maximising every source of non-carbon energy while delivering the 32nd annual celebrity lecture for the Chartered Management Institute in Cumbria.
In a wide ranging speech covering the local, national and global economy, Mr Hutton said as well as nuclear and wind power, the Government needed to look at untapped sources of green energy in Britain, such as tidal power.
Studies had been commissioned into possible tidal barrages in the Severn, Morecambe Bay and the Mersey, he told an audience at Forum 28, Barrow.
