ULVERSTON'S police inspector has defended the role of PCSOs after a member of the public questioned whether they were value for money.
Insp Richard Vernon said he believed the three police community support officers were doing a good job for the town.
In Monday's town council meeting, resident George Drake said he wanted to know if Insp Vernon believed they were providing a good service, adding: "Some people refer to them as cardboard coppers."
Mr Vernon said: "I take exception to that comment. I think we get very good value for money. I have been impressed by the way they are getting involved with the community and people right across the town.
"I think the value we got from these officers comes from the strength of personality they have and I would" like to give them my support."
