READERS have bid farewell to an award winning fish and chip shop.

Priory Plaice Fish and Chips in Ulverston had its last day of service on Saturday (December 17) after four years of trade.

Based on Priory Road, the chip shop was a family-run business set up in December 2018 to fulfil the managers’ life-long ambitions of opening a chip shop.

Within its first few days, the chippy was inundated with customers, cementing themselves as a beloved part of the local community.

Less than six months after opening, the shop was awarded a National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) Fish & Chip Quality Award which recognises the highest quality fish and chip outlets.

And in April last year, Priory Plaice was listed in Fry Magazine as one of the top 50 fish and chip takeaways in the UK.

Last month, Priory Plaice revealed it would not renew its licence due to reasons related to the cost of living.

George Cubiss said: “Hopefully someone can keep it running as a chippy. I remember it getting built and wasn't that long ago...”

Pat Shaw said: “That is bad news, best chippy in Furness. Thank you for feeding us and wish you all best for future.”

John Jackson said: “Sorry to see it closed definitely there business will be missed.”

Bramley Moore said: “Someone else might take it on? A Chinese might do well, save having to go into the clogged up town centre.”

Tourer said: “Interesting story, maybe sign of times, but so close to the huge housing estate, local chippy gone.”

Publicists said: “Sadly this will be the first of many. I expect a few more to close by next Easter. Fish and chips are becoming a luxury item these days.”

Beef Curtain said: “Small family businesses are doomed.”
