A BUSKER has praised the people of Ulverston as the ‘nicest people he has ever come across’ despite controversy surrounding live performers in the town.

Overwhelming praise was offered up to buskers following a noise complaint made against musicians performing on the high street.

Three sets of buskers, including a band and solo guitarist, were playing in Market Street last month when a complainant told police that businesses were being disturbed by the noise.

A police spokesman said a local constable on patrol engaged with three sets of buskers in response to this report. All three said they were either already finishing their sets or had just finished.

No offences were identified and no further action was taken, police said.

Diana Denney, who lives in Pennington, was one of a number of buskers visited by police and said the complaint had made her feel ‘less welcome’ in the town which she considers home.

The incident led to an outpouring of praise for live musicians performing on the town’s streets.

Peter Buckley described busking as ‘life-changing’ and said the locals are some of the nicest people he has ever met.

He said: “I started busking just before Christmas for a few different reasons but the main one being to get myself back to the same level musically that I was at just before the lockdowns occurred.

“I was living in London and playing gigs to pubs and venues packed full of people and then quite suddenly and abruptly the lockdown occurred and rather than stay in London (a city full of people) myself and my wife moved to her hometown Ulverston which as you can imagine is far less busy.

“Over the past two years, I’ve not performed a whole lot but played a few festivals in the summer of 22. I’ve written an album now and I’m pretty determined to get back to the same level I had in London and what better way to do this than busking for a couple of hours every day on the streets of the town I’m currently living in and well it’s worked. I reckon another ten days of an hour here and an hour there and I’ll be ready to go on a tour, which I had planned in 2019, but nobody could see those mad lockdowns coming.

“One of the beautiful aspects of busking in Ulverston has been meeting the locals. Honestly, they are the nicest people I’ve ever come across in my life and in a lot of ways, it’s been completely life changing as my conception of people or mankind for that matter has altered considerably.”
