AN AWARD-winning pub saw hundreds of people joining them for its first Belgian Beer Festival.

The New Union in Kendal has become known for its specialist events, including whisky nights, beer festivals and live music.

Last weekend the pub hosted a successful Belgian Beer Festival with more than 500 people attending over the three days.

Locals made their way into the pub to support the event and to try the best beers produced in Belgium including Orval, Cantillon, Delirium and Kasteel.

Landlord Phil Walker said the event "went really well" and it was "one of the best weekends" they have ever had.

He said: "We were very lucky to sell out of draft beers by the end of Saturday evening.

"We were looking to do this event for quite a few years and we just felt it was the time to try something different to try get people into the pub after the usual quieter times of the year."

"Everybody seemed to have a nice time and it was nice to see people drinking different beer styles.

"Belgium has got an amazing history of brewering fantastic beer. They have one of the best beers in the world that's why we've chosen Belgium in specific. I'm a big Belgium lover myself."

The New Union also offered traditional food throughout the event, including the typical frites with different sauces.

As part of the festival, the pub hosted special tasting sessions and masterclasses which were all sold out.

Phil said: "On Thursday night we were really pleased to work closely with Duvel UK which is one of the breweries from Belgium. They hosted a tasting and they were joined with the importer Matt from James Clay."

The landlord said due to the positive outcome they will be turning the festival as an annual event.

He said: "We are already working with Duvel UK to host an event in the Summer as well."
