THE Bay Search and Rescue team were called out last night.

The specialist rescue crew were called out on Saturday May 29 via Holyhead Coastguard following a 999 call.

They reacted to reports of two persons a significant distance away out in the bay near the Haven Site Flookburgh with incoming tide.

One person was reported as being stuck in the sand, and the other in water with an incoming tide and diminishing light.

BSAR deployed their thermal imaging all-weather drone, to locate the casualties in diminishing light from the sea wall Flookburgh, and from its Arnside base at the Bob In Cafe, the team's Amphibious Sherp.

Three crew members were deployed with full quicksand rescue equipment on board in case the worst situation materialised.

Fortunately, one casualty made it to the shore to make the second 999 call and raise the alarm, and sometime later, they were located by the drone.

The second casualty managed to get free and meet up with the rescuers from both Cumbria Police Arnside & South Lakes Coastguard Rescue Team Furness Coastguard Northwest Ambulance Service Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

The Bay Search and Rescue team said: “Our thanks, as always, to Darren and Rachel at the Bob In Cafe who provide space for the rapid deployment of our rescue vehicles, including the Sherp.

“Superb turnout by BSAR team members and speedy deployment of very special assets with a great result.

“If in any doubt about someone in difficulty on the coast dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard, they will deploy the nearest and most appropriate asset.”
