A KENDAL green that has hosted royal events for decades welcomed the community back to celebrate the coronation.

Greenside Green caught the sun as people gathered to eat, drink and have fun with the family.

The Fellside and Greenside Forum, a community group, hosted a party on the green, with music, stalls, competitions and a picnic from 2pm until 6pm on Sunday. This was the day after the official event with King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Westminster Abbey.

The nearby Summerhill Care Home set up a stall for the event as did Kendal Conservation Volunteers. Terry Parr, 69, from the conservation group, created a throne out of moss, bits of a gate and an old curtain.

People from the care home came out to enjoy the festivities and Sean Moore from Summerhill hosted the stall and did games and activities, which many of the children and the residents enjoyed.

A Celtic music band, which convenes at The Riflemans Arms opposite the green once a month, played music together outside. The group grew as time went on with people bringing fiddles, accordions and guitars.

Susan Heyes, chair of the Fellside and Greenside Forum, said: "There is a long tradition of putting on events on this green. It goes back decades, right back I think to the Silver Jubilee. They've had May Day celebrations and all the Jubilees have been celebrated here, although I think we're doing it bigger and better this year."

Susan thanked Kendal Town Council. She said: "There were grants for up to £750, we didn't ask for that much."

The money was used to repaint a portrait of Charles and Camilla and paid for the insurance as the event needed public liability cover.

The Forum also thanked Kendal Leisure Centre for donating the tables. These were used by the community for eating and drinking.

The Greenside Green celebration was just one of many happening around Kendal for the coronation.

On Friday, Heron Hill School hosted a parade and a picnic at Kendal Leisure Centre. On Saturday, the ceremony was screened at Hallgarth Community Centre. And also on Sunday Sandylands Church replayed the coronation and there were street parties in Kirkbarrow.
