A Fell runner smashed a fundraising challenge for his beloved granddaughter.

Gary Shorrock ran a 47-mile lap around Windermere to raise money for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.

Gary planned to run 8,500 feet of ascents within a 10-hour time limit to support a cause that is very close to his heart.

Gary’s granddaughter Olivia was cared for by Alder Hey Childrens Hospital when she was put in an induced coma after telling her mum she couldn’t breathe.

Gary has run the lap twice before, which is why he added a time limit to his challenge.

Alongside his younger brother Dan, they began their run at 6am by climbing Loughrigg, Wansfell and Baystones to reach Troutbeck by 10am.

Gary said: “Strangely I had no nerves, just an eagerness to go. Troutbeck was buzzing with support, friends cheering us on, taking photos and waving signs. It was almost like a festival, it was humbling, emotional and supportive. It was lovely to see so many people I knew, most of the family and Olivia.”

Olivia had made signs saying things like 'Go Go Grandad Gary'.

Gary said the temperature soared and it was hard at times, a few disheartening climbs tested him and he decided to finish slightly later than he had planned.

By abandoning his time limit, Gary was able to take photographs and enjoy the support from friends and family.

Gary reached the finish to hear his family cheering and Olivia even sprinted to the finish with her grandad.

The initial £5,000 target has been more than doubled and Gary has raised £11000 that will go to the children’s hospital.

He said: “I’ve been humbled and have had people help me that I’ve never met. A huge Thank you to everyone who supported me. I am still very emotional after the weekend and will be forever thankful to Alder Hey. A child’s life is priceless.”
