It was a scorching day and the sun shone brightly as pupils took part in their annual sports day.

On Tuesday June 13, 75 pupils from Burlington School in Kirkby-in-Furness enjoyed a fun-filled Sports Day.

The whole school turned up for an energetic event at the community centre sports field, nursery pupils and senior students all took part from the ages of three to 11.

The children were supported by their parents, who were invited to watch, and all of the school staff were there to cheer them on.

The event was sponsored by Joe Dunworth, who runs a community fitness business called JD Training, Sports day started with an invigorating warm up led by Joe, the children stretched and danced to music before the games began.

To keep everyone safe from the heat, the community centre was open to provide a cool retreat and the PTA were on hand to keep pupils hydrated and happy with fruit, juice and biscuits.

The children were split up into year groups and took turns completing a section of activity before rotating around the playing field to the next section.

The stations ranged from step ladders to sprints, relays and hurdles to throwing and jumping.

They wore different coloured T-shirts to show which school house they were part of – red, yellow, green or blue, at the end of the afternoon their scores were tallied up to determine which house came out on top.

During the presentation of awards, children were recognised for their sporting success, The Sporting Achievement shield, donated by Joe, was awarded to year six pupils, Mia Steele and Joel Ashburner.

Overall, yellow team were announced as sports day winners.

Amber Brakewell from Year 4 said: "Thank you Joe for helping make our sports day special. We hope you will do the same again next year."

Joe Dunworth said it was amazing to sponsor the Burlington school sports day 2023, he will be working closely with the school in the future, to teach children the importance of physical and mental health.
