Motorists on the M6 reported seeing smoke billowing from the side of the motorway this morning (July 12). The smoke was noticed by several drivers just before the the turn off into Kendal.

The fire didn't appear to be coming from a vehicle but appeared to originated over the barrier in bushes between junctions 35 and 36. Traffic slowed to allow firecrews from both Lancashire and Cumbria to attend.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: "At 08:42 on 12 July, two fire engines from Lancaster and Carnforth – together with one from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service – attended a small fire in woodland next to the M6 Northbound, between J35 and J36.

"Firefighters extinguished the fire using buckets of water. They were in attendance for ten minutes."
