A GHYLL scrambler was taken to hospital with a broken ankle after 'catching it' in a rockslide.

Yesterday, July 26 at 11.06am, mountain rescue teams from Keswick were called to Stonycroft Beck, Newlands.

A participant in an organised ghyll scramble suffered a broken ankle after catching it on one of the rock slides.

Once on scene, the Keswick team extricated the casualty from the ghyll and provided pain relief before splinting the ankle.

The casualty was then stretchered down to the road for onward transfer to hospital.

The call out was a special one for one of the mountain rescue team members, who was completing his 1,500th rescue.

A Keswick MRT spokesman said: "This call-out was team member Simon’s 1,500th rescue.

"He joined the team in 1987, and by the look of him it must have been straight after primary school!

"Well done Simon, an amazing achievement."
