A bakery in Kendal was featured on a BBC Two cookery show last Tuesday, hosted by Nadiya Hussain.

The former Great British Bake Off winner was championing a traditional recipe from the area, with help from the team at Ginger Bakers.

The show, 'Nadiya's Simple Spices', aims to prove that cooking with spices does not have to be complicated, with last week's episode promoting the Westmorland Pepper Cake.

Lisa Smith, who founded the company 18 years ago, said: "It was an honour to be asked by Nadiya’s team to film a section about our beloved cake.

"The film crew came to my house to film me making the cake, and a little bit about why I love the cake so much."

Ms Smith wanted to take the opportunity to thank the team for being lovely and for making her feel at ease.

"They were fascinated to learn about the cake and it’s origins," she added.

"It’s a cake that is very close to my heart, having researched this traditional recipe which is now featured in the Slow Food Movements ‘Ark Of Taste’."

The Ark of Taste exists to help preserve recipes and ingredients that are local to an area including items from all over the world.

The Westmorland Pepper cake is a fruit cake, which dates back to the 18th century, when dried fruits, spices and sugars were exchanged for wool.

The addition of cloves, ginger and freshly cracked black pepper makes this a warming cake, ideal with some butter or a slice of cheese.

Ms Smith said: "We were thrilled it was included [in the Ark] in 2017 and that Nadiya’s team chose to shine a spotlight on it during the programme.

"It’s unusual to use pepper in a sweet cake, however, we think it really adds to this cake and we're excited that so many people have now heard, and tried this Cumbrian delicacy.”
