A seasonal shop in Kendal has been forced to close its doors immediately.

'Christmas and More', found at 10 Market Place, closed for the final time on Saturday, November 25.

Co-owner Cath Hutchinson explained that they had faced a 'lengthy battle' with their landlords over an increase in their rent.

She said: "We received an email out of the blue this week stating that, if we didn’t pay the increased amount owing by midnight on Saturday, the bailiffs would come in and remove goods.

"So we had no other option but to close as I don’t have the huge amount they require."

The shop opened three years ago in what was described as a lifetime dream for Cath, her partner Richard Aylett, their daughter Rebekah and her partner Jason.

"We have overcome several problems in the three years we have been open," Cath detailed.

"There was no government funding for new businesses during Covid, then Westmorland Shopping Centre sold the upper floor to Kendal College which dramatically reduced our footfall."

A recent flood from the landlord's flat above the shop also caused the business to temporarily close for three weeks.

Cath thanked their 'lovely customers' and apologised for the 'untimely' nature of the closure, just before the shop's busiest time of the year.

"All Santa letters already received will be answered and all booked Santa visits will be refunded as soon as possible," she said.

"We have loved our time in Kendal and once again thank you all for your support."

Following the announcement on Facebook, the news has not gone down with locals, who have loved having the shop in town.

One user said: "This shop holds a special place in the hearts of many, including myself and my children."

Another added: "You had such a lovely shop and it’s yet another blow for Kendal town's ‘shopping’ experience."
