THE Roxy Cinema in Ulverston has gained its alcohol license in time for Christmas, so you can enjoy a glass of something special during a festive film!

From Friday, the cinema is stocked with a selection of beverages including both red and white wine, Prosecco, cider and a selection of Ales from Ulverston Brewing Company. They will also have some gins and a couple of cocktails.

It was important to The Roxy that they chose a local supplier because the cinema looks to local people for support and wanted to return the favour.

The Roxy is one of six cinemas owned by Charles Morris, who runs Northern Morris Cinemas, and is the second establishment to gain a license to sell alcohol.

Alongside cinemas in Elland, Keighley, Leeds, Skipton and Windermere, Charles has been running the Roxy since September 2006.

Charles said it is simpler to have a licence operating all the time, “In the past, we’ve had various temporary licences for specific events, but people seem to expect alcohol when they come to our live media events, shows and performances.

“We make a trip to The Roxy into a night out, so this is an additional attraction that will be especially welcomed by customers.”

Charles said it’s going to be a lively Christmas with showings of classics such as Elf and The Polar Express as well as Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker by the Royal Ballet.

The Roxy will welcome Timothy Chalamet’s ‘Wonka’ to the screen on Friday December 15 which will be a nice one for families to watch (as parents enjoy a drink!).

As per tradition, the Roxy is showing the classic Christmas film ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ on Christmas Eve. However, tickets for the 11am showing have already sold out, so the cinema has decided to put on an additional showing in the evening, at 5:15pm. This means there are another 320 seats available.

The interval will feature carol singing and a run of vintage clips and advertisements while offering a chance to purchase a glass of prosecco or indulge in a tub of ice-cream.

The first event to be held at the Roxy with the new alcohol licence is a live performance by rock legends T-Rex who will be supported by local musician Patsy Gillam.

“Running a cinema has been my dream since I was a youngster,” Charles said, “It’s my passion.

“The building dates to 1937 and has an authentic art-deco ambience that you don’t get in newer places. The Roxy is special because it’s not like anywhere else, there’s a personal touch in the presentation with the theatricality of the curtains and the atmosphere set by coloured lights.

“It’s a community cinema, we know a lot of the customers who come in and its always great to see our regulars!

“We really care about your experience at The Roxy, we’re never in a rush to get people in and out. We really are grateful for local support and hope to see everyone again soon!”
