Cumbrian sculptors have been invited to submit their work for a chance to win the inaugural New Light Sculpture Prize.

Kicking off with entries opening on January 1, the competition seeks artists connected to the Northern counties of Cheshire, Cumbria, Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland, or Yorkshire either by birth, education or residence.

Concluding on March 30, the competition paves the way for sculptures to enter the New Light Art Prize exhibition, commencing from 26 February at Bankside Gallery in London.

Sam Waters, judge for the New Light Sculpture Prize. said: "It feels particularly significant to be able to offer another aspect to the New Light prize."

He highlighted the shortage of opportunities for sculptors compared to other artists, and looked forward to an exciting display of diverse and illuminating works.

The winner will bag a £1000 prize, provided by The Biscuit Foundation, as well as a chance to display their work at The Biscuit Factory in Newcastle.

Rebekah Tadd, development director at New Light said: "We are very excited to be launching the New Light Sculpture Prize.

"There are a huge number of talented sculptors across the region and we are delighted to be able to work with The Biscuit Factory to provide this opportunity.”
