THE Met Office has given an update on the weather in Cumbria for the rest of this month - although temperatures are set to dip this does not mean it will snow.

This may come as some relief as at the beginning of last month the region saw a large amount of snowfall over one weekend with Cumbria Police declaring a major incident in the South Lakes and Millom areas on December 2.

However a period of high pressure does mean that temperatures are expected to drop in the coming weeks with lower precipitation.

Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said: "What we are seeing across the UK is the weather starting to settle down. High pressure will dominate, with a reduced risk of any snowfall. We aren't expecting to see much snow in the forecast. By the time you get to Saturday, it will be a much drier picture throughout the weekend and into next week."

Mr Claydon said that in the second half of January there is an increased chance of 'cooler than average conditions' but it was too early to call if there will be snow this winter. Cumbrian weather is dominated by westerly winds which can bring snow at this time of the year.
