AN instructor is setting up a training group in Ulverston for people aiming to learn a new martial art.

Cognition Jiu Jitsu is the new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu group at Ulverston Leisure Centre set up by Luke Evans.

The 35-year-old is a black belt with more than ten years of experience in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu who started training in his early 20s whilst travelling and living in New Zealand.

On returning to the UK, Luke joined Lakes BJJ in Kendal where he spent the next decade working from white to black belt, competing in National and European championships.

Now living in Ulverston with his family, Luke is looking forward to starting to offer courses, classes and workshops in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu throughout 2024, from beginners to advanced levels, for adults and children.

Luke explained the numerous benefits of joining his classes in people's mental and physical health.

He said: "I want to create a tribe and a good community of people where people make new friends, training partners and offering a place where people can have a good time while at the same time getting fit and learning a great sport.

"The sport builds your confidence because the nature of learning Brazilian jiu jiitsu is that you learn to feel comfortable in very uncomfortable situations, which is a byproduct of the training. You learn how to problem solve and be in a high pressure environment whilst you are practising the sport.

"For kids, it is learning how to channel your energy into something that is productive, and you can learn to control your emotions, control your ego and have better self-control - especially in a sports environment when you go up the ranks."

The classes will start in February on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5pm to 5.45pm for children and 6pm to 7pm for adults. On Saturdays, children's classes will run from 9am until 9.45am and adults' classes from 10am to 11am.
